Keywords: Positive energy districts, Sustainability assessment, Carbon neutrality

Journal publication: MDPI special issue entitled “Contribution of Smart City Solutions to Positive Energy Districts and Climate-Neutral Cities

Description:

Positive Energy Districts are becoming increasingly more of interest on a EU and international scientific landscape: the possibility of developing decarbonisation actions in synergy with several other domains – including energy efficiency in industry and buildings, integration of renewable energy systems to the urban context, efficient low carbon transportation and mobility, energy planning – is paramount in the current efforts towards the safeguard of the environment and to achieve the most pressing climate objectives discussed and agreed upon at the international level.

In this context, Positive Energy Districts design, planning and realization require interdisciplinary approaches and different know-how and skills, which should include the aspect of sustainability in the general dimensions of environmental, economic and social sustainability.

The session, promoted by IEA-EBC ANNEX 83 (Subtask-C) in cooperation with COST ACTION EU PED-NET (WG3) and EU Smart Cities and Communities projects (TG M&E) will focus on tackling the fundamental aspects of sustainability assessment of Positive Energy Districts, proposing advancements within the field and promoting a holistic approach aimed at breaking the silos of knowledge as the only way forward.

The session will include case studies of Positive Energy Districts modelling and simulation aimed at decarbonization, analyses of good practices to achieve sustainability objectives, sustainability assessment frameworks and key performance indicators, sustainability assessment methodologies with a focus on environmental, economic and social impacts as well as on the development of aspects of true integration among the different dimensions.
